Family Weekend

Family Weekend, in the middle of Autumn Quarter, is an opportunity for families to see students in their environment, learn more about the College’s curriculum and traditions, visit model classes, and ask questions about programs and services. Families can meet the President, the Dean of the College, the Dean of Students, Resident Masters and Resident Heads, and their student’s academic advisers. It is a time, too, to get to know better your student’s roommates and friends, and enjoy a trip downtown for shopping, dining, or sightseeing. Additional information can be found on the Family Weekend website.

Career Services

CAPS career counselors work with second-year students to help them navigate the sometimes challenging process of career exploration. Second-year students are encouraged to come into CAPS for one-on-one advising, and to attend as many CAPS programs as interest them.

Suggestions you can offer your second-year student:

  • Schedule an appointment with CAPS
Meet with a member of our Undergraduate Preparation Team to talk about your resume and what types of career fields interest you.
  • Log into your account on Chicago Career Connection.
Search for internships and opportunities that sound interesting.
  • Apply for an Alumni Board of Governors Externship
The ABG Externship Program provides first and second year students with the opportunity to spend their spring break exploring a career field that they are interested in. This program isn't open to third or fourth years, so make sure you apply this year!
  • Attend Taking the Next Step
This program is for second- and third-years and provides students with the opportunity to meet with alumni from a variety of backgrounds, to learn more about their career paths and how a University of Chicago degree has helped them to succeed.
  • Explore CAPS’ Pre-Professional Programs in Journalism, Law and Health Professions.
Visit the CAPS website for more information about these initiatives.
